What is Fighters of Fate?
Fighters of Fate is a fighting game developed and published by SNK. It was released in arcades in Japan on July 28, 1992, and later for the Neo Geo home console. The game features eight playable characters, each with their own reasons for entering the tournament as well as their own ending.
History of the game
Fighters of Fate was created by a team of five designers, including Eikichi Kawasaki and Takashi Nishiyama. The game was originally going to be titled "Ultimate 11", but was changed to simply "Fate" due to copyright issues. Nishiyama came up with the idea for the game after being inspired by Bruce Lee's film Game of Death.
Fighters of Fate is a 2D fighting game played with four buttons: two attack buttons and two kick buttons. The game uses a system similar to that of Street Fighter II, in which players can perform special moves by inputting specific button combinations. However, unlike Street Fighter II, Fighters of Fate does not use a six-button layout; instead, it uses a four-button layout similar to SNK's own Art of Fighting.
The eight playable characters in Fighters of Fate are:
Lee Rekka: A Chinese kung fu master who enters the tournament to prove his martial arts skills.
Gai Tendo: A Japanese karate practitioner who enters the tournament to avenge his sister's death.
Hanzo Hattori: A ninja who enters the tournament to exact revenge on Gai Tendo, whom he blames for his father's death.
Shiro Tokisada: A samurai who enters the tournament to find out who killed his master.
Clark Still: An American military officer who enters the tournament to track down a terrorist group.
Li Xiangfei: A Chinese woman who enters the tournament to find her missing brother.
Robert Garcia: A wealthy Brazilian man who enters the tournament to prove his fighting prowess.
Mai Shiranui: Robert Garcia's personal bodyguard and secret lover, who enters the tournament to protect him.
Fighters of Fate was generally well-received by critics. In a contemporary review, Allgame's Kurt Kalata praised the game's graphics and animation, but criticized its short length and lack of originality. However, he concluded that "Fate is yet another decent entry in the genre, even if it doesn't do anything to stand out from the crowd."
Fighters of Fate is a solid entry in the fighting game genre. It features great graphics and animation, as well as addictive gameplay. However, it is not particularly innovative or original, and its short length may be disappointing to some players. Nevertheless, it is still a fun game that is worth checking out.
